Why am I doing this? I hate chain emails.

But I guess maybe it's different on a blog. Apparently, it's called a "meme" and...

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

So, here goes:

The timocratic constitution degenerates into oligarchy (the rule of the few) when honour-loving turns to money-grubbing. The city is divided into rich rulers and poor subjects. In the soul of the oligarchic man, pleasure-loving but ungenerous, the desiring part prevails over the reasoning and spirited parts.
The oligarchic constitution degenerates into democracy (the rule of the people) when the poor in the oligarchic state revolt. All are then set free to do as they wish--and, says Socrates in effect, to go to the devil in their own way.

That was from the Great Dialogues of Plato, in the Summary of the Republic. Terribly exciting.

Sorry, I know some of you already got this. I don't know very many bloggers.

Liberty

I can't help but think that it's a little tacky for the GOVERNMENT to make it's "Vote-By-Mail" voters (that's what absentee is called now) pay for their own postage. I guess freedom really ain't free--It costs $0.41.

as a bat

...well, not really.

I had set my glasses next to me on the bed last night, tucked gently under the corner of my pillow. Usually, this works fine, and they are sitting next to me when I wake up in the morning. But this morning, they simply weren't there.

This will take some explaining... Bed bed is lofted on my desk and my bookcase. The bookcase is up against the wall next to the window. I've been wanting to move it out an inch for a while so as to be able to plug in my alarm clock, but it hasn't happened. My glasses ended up on the floor behind this bookcase. And Sara was asleep.

So I had to be creative. I ended up tying an eraser with a piece of yarn and hanging it down behind the bookshelf and fishing it out, all while trying not to wake Sara up or have a panic attack. (I always start to feel panicky when I can't see.)

So, that was my first adventure for the morning. In a few minutes we'll be leaving for the next adventure: the Tridentine Mass at St. Peter's. (in Steubenville) That should be awesome. Tell you more about it later!

God bless,
-Rebekah

#100

Had to stop and commemorate this momentous occasion! This is the official 100th post on my blog! Thanks for reading, and here's to another 100 just as fun!

Yarn Yarn Yarn...

And it's not just me this time!

Molly had seen me making socks in the French movie night last semester, so she knew I was loopy that way, but yeah. After Honors on Monday, she asked me to teach her to knit. (She had a kit that she had never gotten far with.) Seeing as it was the first day of school, we decided to do it that night. So we ended up a couple hours later in the 3rd floor stub wing common room. There was Me, Molly, Megan, Katie Schuerger, and some others who weren't actually knitting and therefore won't be named here (muahahaha!). Molly did very well, even ignoring the fact that she just learned the knit stitch that night. I think we may make knitting night a regular activity!

That's all for now, I think I'll be going to the basketball game this afternoon. More posts when I have time!
God bless,

Class Rundown

It's been a week now since I got back to campus. It seems like a lot longer. Everything is so much the same that it almost feels like I never left, even though I'm in a different dorm room.

I'm taking five classes again this semester, but fortunately, I'm enjoying all of them.

-Psychology with Dr. Fischer, who is the funniest and most random teacher you've ever seen. He'll make the strangest comments and do the oddest things. It keeps the class interesting. His class promises to be both fascinating and easy enough to pass.

-Honors with Dr. Wear, who is very different from Dr. Almeida. Her class is much more structured. She gives us a page of reflections to write for each reading assignment, and goes over background information the week before. Because of this, I think I'm going to get a lot more out of this semester. But most of the people are the same, which is lots of fun. Plus, class is in the science building. Hmmm.

-French with Dr. Williams and

-Spanish with Dr. Klapicova are basically the same as last semester. Makes it easy to keep track of.

-And Foundations (Theology 101) with a Professor Wills, who looks like he's about 25. It's kind of odd, cause the vibe doesn't feel quite as "teacher-student-relationship-y" if you know what I mean. That aside, the subject matter looks to be interesting.

So there's my classes. Hopefully they won't get in the way of blogging!

Flight Troubles

So, it was 10:00 pm on Saturday night. I was packing for my flight back to Steubenville that was scheduled to leave the next morning at 7:10 am. My dad reminded me to check in online (I had thought that it couldn't be done till midnight, but the start of check-in was 24 hours before) and we found out that my flight had been canceled due to fog. Ahh!

Dad called Southwest Airlines and managed to get my ticket changed, but the flight now left at 9:50 am, three hours later. This wouldn't have been a problem, really. We were all supposed to check into the dorms between 12 and 6 pm, but there's a little wiggle-room left over for traveling troubles. The real issue was getting from the airport to Steubenville. I had a ride all queued up at 4:30, but Joyce was sweet and patient enough to come at 7:30 instead. But... my flight out of Midway was delayed half an hour, so she had to wait till 8:00 to finally pick me up. Fortunately, my luggage did not get lost.

So, there's that. I'll be blogging more soon, hopefully after I finish some homework. Until then,
God bless,

My Last Night at Home

My recent discovery that the same company both runs the food service on campus was the caterer for World Youth Day 2005 in Germany lends itself to all sorts of cravings for the restaurants back home in Poway. We didn't get to visit too many of them while I was there for Christmas, so it was nice to be able to eat at Souplantation on my last night before returning to school.

Basically it was just my last night with everything that is home. And, of course, I mean home in the broad sense of the city (I'd settle for the state, actually) because we clearly were not at home when we were at Souplantation.

Then came the long night of packing, spiced up by some horrifying realizations and an extra last-minute scramble, all of which will be explained in the next post.

Until then, I'll be asleep (and yours truly,
-Rebekah)

Spa Night!

First off, I want to quickly apologize for not posting recently. I am going to go on a posting frenzy now, in chronological order, and see how far I can get. So... yeah.

Mom had put on her Christmas wish list some sort of exfoliating lotion, and I had gotten her name. So I decided to take the lotion and make made the gift more interesting by adding a personal touch. I basically invited her to a mother-daughter-daughter-daughter spa night. It took quite a while to find a night to do it, though, so we didn't get around to spa night until the night before the night before I left. (Friday)

It was fun. We gave each other pedicures and foot massages. We even broke out the face masks that mom has had lying around for so long.

We watched Emma (the really old, four-hour version) which was good, though Beth had to leave part way through in order to go to bed.

Well, it was a great second-to-last night at home.
God bless,
-Rebekah

There may be a small delay

The internet hasn't been working in my room yet. Hopefully I can still get it fixed this evening, but if I don't, there may be a bit of a delay in my blog posting.

I have quite a lot to tell you all about my last few days at home, my flight troubles, and the new semester here. So, look forward to lots of good things to come!

For this post, though, here's my new room phone number:
740-283-4247
Please don't call the number I gave you last semester. That belongs to someone else now. I'll also change the number on the contact info post from last fall.

Hope to hear from you!
God bless,
-Rebekah

Security Woes

I've found a new hobby for long waits at airports. Repacking my bags! Or, at least, having the TSA repack them. I have no idea why my breifcase aroused suspicion, (except maybe just for the benefit of the trainee) but they didn't find anything. It was neat to see what they do, though, and it made the workers seem more real and natural.

Count Down

You ought to know...

I'll be leaving to go back to school on Sunday, January 13 at 7:00 am! Which means I have to get to the airport at 6ish, which means I have to wake up before 5! I have to check into the dorms before 5pm. Darn time change!

Alright! This vacation has been great and I'll miss all my friends back home (and the ones on the East coast or in the Eastern hemisphere.)

God bless,
-Rebekah

Non-Violence

I'm pretty sure that most of my readers don't have Windows Vista, and that very few of those ever play Minesweeper.

Anyway, they've added a different color scheme where mines are replaced by a "flower garden".

Apparently, we've gone politically correct, and child-friendly.

Word of the Day

Quite Funny

I've mentioned this video clip to a few different people recently and none of them had ever seen it, so I thought I'd post it here. One of those classic Colbert segments.

Enjoy!

I did it! It's done!

Due to time zone differences, I bet Megan's waking up about now. But it's 3:00 am here, and I finally finished the scrapbook from our trip to World Youth Day in August 2005. It's 35 (or 70) pages long and my first completed scrapbook. I'll bring it with me back to school so everyone can see.

Anyway, now I can get started on some of the photos from my first semester at Franciscan.

But first, I'm going to bed!

God bless,
-Rebekah
